Srinagar is especially known for its lakes and houseboats. Apart from this, Srinagar is also world famous for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. The history of Srinagar is very old. It is believed that this place was founded by Emperor Ashok Maurya . Five other districts are situated around this district. Srinagar district is located north of Kargil, south of Pulwama, next to north-west of Budhagam.

Srinagar
is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. These cities and their surrounding areas were once considered the most beautiful tourist destinations in the world – such as Dal Lake , Shalimar and Nishat Bagh, Gulmarg , Pahalgam , Chashmashahi , etc. Here Hindi cinema was the shooting of several films. In the Hazrat Bal Mosque of Srinagar,it is believed that a hair of Hazrat Muhammad ‘s beard is kept there. In Srinagar itself is the Shankaracharya mountain , where the famous Hindu religious reformer and exponent of Advaita Vedanta , Adi Shankaracharya He was seated on the seat of Sarvajnan peeth. Boats, especially shikaras, are the means of commuting, traveling and shopping in the Dal Lake and the Jhelum River (Sanskrit: vista, Kashmiri: vyath). The Dal Lake adorned with lotus flowers also has many beautiful boat houses called houseboats. Historians believe that Srinagar was settled by the Maurya Emperor Ashoka

Some distance away from Srinagar is a very old Martand (Sun) temple. Some distance away is the cave of Amarnath dedicated to Shiva in Anantnag district which is visited by thousands of pilgrims. Thirty kilometers from Srinagar is the shrine of Muslim Sufi saint Sheikh Nooruddin Wali , Charar-e-Sharif , which was burnt down by Islamist terrorists a few years ago, but later it was repaired.

The architecture of Srinagar

Srinagar is not only rich in natural beauty but also in terms of architectural heritage. There are many beautiful mosques here. Hazrat Bal is an important shrine here. It is a very holy place for the Muslim community due to the hair of Hazrat Mohammad being stored here. The dome of this white marble buildingIt makes tourists feel its grandeur from a distance. Shah Hamdan is famous for being a mosque. It was renovated for the first time in 1395. After that it was renovated several times. The Jama Masjid here is also a mosque built by wood. Its building stands on more than three hundred pillars. These pillars are of the trunk of a deodar tree. Apart from these, Pathar Masjid, Dastgir Sahib and Makhdoom Sahib are also worth seeing. A fort built in the 16th century on the Hariparvat hill in the heart of Srinagar also attracts tourists.

It was built by the Afghan governor Ata Muhammad Khan. Akbar expanded this fort. On the other side is the Takht-e-Sulaiman hill in front of Dal Lake. On its summit is the famous Shankaracharya temple . This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shankar . Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 10th centuryCame here, due to which this temple got its name.

The Dal Lake extends from the hill on one side and a panoramic view of Srinagar on the other. A magnificent row of snow peaks is clearly visible in the background.

Every tourist who comes here first reaches Srinagar, which is the main city here and the summer capital of the state. Srinagar is also the main commercial centre of the Valley. The city looks a bit different as compared to other hill stations. The houses and markets here did not settle on the hill slopes. Being situated in the middle of a wide valley, it looks like a plain city.

But the snow-capped mountain peaks visible in the background give the impression that the tourists are actually in a resort at a height of 1730 meters above sea level. When the people living in the houseboat have to go somewhere, they first come from Shikara to the road. To enhance the beauty of the lake, one must definitely go around with a shikara. In this way, the sellers of shawls, saffron, jewellery, flowers etc. will keep coming closer to you with their shop adorned in shikaras. Not only this, you can also get your picture clicked in a Kashmiri dress in the floating photo studio in the water.

Dal Lake : A view of the banks of Dal Lake

The biggest attraction of Srinagar is the Dal Lake here. Where there is a glow from morning till evening. Tourists roam around its banks for hours or enjoy boating while sitting in shikaras. A different colour of the beauty of this lake is seen in every phase of the day. If seen, Dal Lake itself is like a floating city. Floating accommodations i.e., houseboats, floating markets and floating vegetable gardens are its specialty. Many people come here only to enjoy living in the floating houses i.e., houseboats of Dal Lake. Nehru Park is on a small island in the middle of the lake. From there too the form of the lake looks different.

A row of tall Sarpat trees near the road, a tall fountain running in front of them presents a very beautiful scene. It is also pleasant to walk around the lake. This lake looks alive even in the evening. At sunset, the orange colour of the sky paints the lake in its own colour, So the reflection of the twinkling lights of the houseboat after sunset doubles the beauty of the lake. There is a huge crowd here in the evening.

If you want to stay in a houseboat in a quiet environment beyond the hustle and bustle, then tourists can stay in the houseboat standing on the Nagin Lake or Jhelum River. Nagin Lake is also a beautiful and small lake of Kashmir. Often foreign tourists like to stay here. On the other hand, there are small houseboats in the Jhelum River.

History of the houseboat: Today houseboats have turned into a sort of luxury and some people come to Kashmir from far and wide just to enjoy the pleasure of staying in a houseboat. Staying in a houseboat is indeed a unique experience in itself. But it actually started out of compulsion, not luxury. The practice of houseboats in Kashmir began during the period of the Dogra kings, when they banned outsiders from buying permanent property and building houses in Kashmir.

At that time many Englishmen and others started living here by building wooden cabins on big boats. Then it became a trend to live in houseboats on Dal Lake, Nagin Lake and Jhelum. Later the local people also started living in houseboats. Even today the houseboats of the local people can be seen floating on the river Jhelum. The houseboats built in the early period were very small, they did not even have so many facilities, but now they have taken the form of luxury. Modern houseboats with all amenities are like a small hotel.

Rooms with double beds, attached baths, wardrobes, TVs, dining halls, open decks, etc. are all available in a houseboat standing on the water. The wooden houseboats also look very beautiful to see. They are of different grades depending on their size and features. The old wooden bridge over the Jhelum River flowing through the city is also an attraction for tourists. Many mosques and other buildings are located near this river.

Highlights: Talking about Srinagar, who does not know Jammu and Kashmir because of its beauty, but there is also a dark aspect of this that it is one of the most disturbed areas of the country because since independence due to various reasons. has been a victim of violence. If we consider leaving everything else aside, then this is the most beautiful state of the country, on which nature has blessed a lot and for this reason people from abroad come to see Jammu and Kashmir. Today we are talking about Srinagar so let us know some things about Srinagar history in today’s.
